Kanye West is the best celebrity.

Kanye West is fucking crazy. But it needs to be said that this guy is literally the best celebrity alive. He’s easy to hate, but I don’t understand why anyone would waste their energy doing that. There are so many shades of Kanye. Sure, he’s crazy, but, it takes a lot of talent to be crazy in as many different ways and as good as Kanye does it. Although he’s known for bombarding award shows with his crazy outbursts, there is a method to his madness.

Kanye’s first album College Dropout went triple platinum and is considered a legendary hip hop album. This is original Kanye. Musically, he’s heavy on the samples, and soul influence. I think it’s possible that Kanye may not even have been that crazy yet, but his narcissism and ego were still just seedlings of blossoming insanity. Kanye started as a black sheep. He came out rapping in clothing from Gap clothing and pink polo shirts. A rapper that looked the way he did was unheard of. He was a pretty boy and no one in the rap game was capitalizing off that at the time. He just wasn’t profitable. I don’t even think Jay-Z believed in Kanye. On the last track of the album Kanye West is introduced by Jay-Z telling him to fuck off for ‘making him do this shit’. Kanye then proceeds to spit one of the best verses of his career. His verse is honest and refreshingly self-aware.

“The all around the world Digital Underground, Pac
The Rudolph the red nosed reindeer of the Roc
I take my chain, my 15 seconds of fame
And come back next year with the whole fucking game
Ain’t nobody expect Kanye to end up on top
They expected that College Dropout to drop and then flop”

The underdog is a recurring theme throughout the album, and it’s appropriate considering that Kanye’s career overcame a lot of adversity. The album established Kanye as a serious musician. I like this album because it was before all the bullshit. It’s Kanye at his purest. It’s crazy Kanye before crazy famous Kanye.

Kanye’s second album was similar to the first, but just as good if not better. Still soulful and still heavy on the samples. I love this Kanye because the music feels so calm and peacefu, while still being able to conceptually confront any topic. The second track on the album, Heard ‘Em Say is piano heavy and backed by Adam Levine singing like a god damn angel. But the lyrics are laced with some really heavy opinions on race and politics. Kanye West, very casually, mentions in his first verse that he “knows the government administered AIDs.” and then in his second verse he says

“My aunt Pam can’t put those cigarettes down,
Now my lil cousin smokin those cigarettes now,
His job trying to claim that he too niggerish now,
Is it cuz his skin blacker than licorice now?”

Damn Kanye, That’s some heavy stuff. Kanye has always been opinionated. Anyone who actually listens to his music will notice that his content is just as opinionated and extreme as he is. His behavior should not be a surprise.

A lot of times he actually makes a good point. In 2004 Kanye West stormed out of American Music Awards after losing Best New Artist to Gretchen Wilson. He said he felt robbed. Where the hell is Gretchen Wilson now? I don’t know, nor do I care. Where is Kanye West right now? probably doing something awesome and famous while slapping Kim Kardashian’s ass as they wear matching outfits. He knew he was going to be this big before anyone else. And most of this is all before this whole shit storm happened.

“I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family and they say we are looting, you see a white family and they say they are looking for food. And, you know, it’s been five days because most of the people ARE black. And even for me to complain, I would be a hypocrite because I would turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I’m calling my business manager right to see what is the biggest amount I can give. And just to imagine, if I was down there and those are my people down there. If there is anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help about the way America is set up the help the poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. Red Cross is doing as much as they can. We already realize a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way. And now they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us.”

[insert an uncomfortable Mike Myers still staying true to the teleprompter]

“George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

and then boom, just when you thought Mike Myers couldn’t get anymore uncomfortable. This is literally one of my favorite video clips of all time. It’s so beautiful. President Bush actually later went on to say that it was one of the most disgusting moments of his presidency. KANYE WEST IS THE REASON FOR GEORGE BUSH’S MOST DISGUSTING EXPERIENCE AS PRESIDENT. This is especially shocking considering that President Bush was in office during one of the most senseless acts of violence and tragedy to ever happen in America’s history. Yet somehow Kanye West calling him racist is the most disgusting thing to happen to him. I gotta love the interaction between one of the most idiotic presidents the United States has ever had in office and one of the most egocentric and crazy celebrities of past decade.

Around the same time Kanye appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone wearing a thorn of crowns decorated as a modern Jesus. The first of many times where Kanye alludes to himself as a god. He also has said that he believes if he’d be a character in a modern day bible. I actually agree with Kanye on this. How else could anyone possibly explain the last 10 years of social and pop culture without ever mentioning Kanye West? Whether people like it or not there is no denying his influence. In 2007 MTV chose Britney Spears over West to open at the VMAs. Kanye said that MTV chose Britney as a way to exploit her for ratings. Well, yeah, no shit. Of course they did, they’re MTV. He wasn’t the only one  pissed at Britney’s performance, even her fans called her out. It was extremely lazy and underwhelming. I’d be pissed if I were in Kanye’s shoes. Imagine working your ass off on a song tailored for a VMA performance (Stronger) and then losing the opportunity to a lackluster performer. It’s not fair. Kanye is simply just a man of justice.

It’s just like the Taylor Swift incident. He had a point. Beyonce’s video is better than Swift’s. Conceptually Beyonce’s is a lot more original. I’ve seen so many music videos like Swift’s which caters to every teenage girl suffering from special snowflake syndrome.  Beyonce’s video has a one take 360 degree shot of amazing choreography. The lighting in the video is also impressive as it constantly against the backdrop, yet still illuminating Beyonce and her dancers. Kanye West is right once again.

I don’t disagree that it was out of line. Of course it was inappropriate, and of course it was rude, but honestly why would I ever expect a celebrity to not be those things? Celebrities are famous, they don’t need manners. Hell, I know I sure as hell wouldn’t be polite as a celebrity. Celebrities exist for entertainment and worshipping. They are the modern day greek gods and goddesses. This is why Kanye West is an amazing celebrity. He isn’t polite and it’s terrific. I don’t need a famous person to be polite. It’s not like I’m going to hang out with them anyway.

Every phase he’s gone through has been more exciting than the last. Most Kanye haters group every Kanye West there has been as one collective douchebag. Kanye is more complex than that. He’s manages to be the epitome of a heroic underdog story, while maintaining the insanity of a supervillain. He’s a celebrity anti-hero. Ready to save the day from bullshit award show injustice.

It kind of pains my heart to see he hasn’t done something like that in a while. I actually thought it was kind of healthy to have at least one guy to be completely drunk, opinionated and inappropriate at the award shows. Actually, if it were up to me I’d put a giant throne on stage and just hire Kanye West to interrupt every celebrity.

Although Kanye hasn’t had any award show controversy lately he has still been just as relevant. After Amber Rose left him for Wiz Khalifa, he released three kick ass albums which came out to widely positive reviews. And now he dates Kim Kardashian and all they do is match black outfits together. Kanye continues to have an ego, but it seems he has really under control now. It’s kind of unfortunate, but awesome because now it’s like he’s synthesized it into a martial art. Like in this video of Kanye, Kim, Kourtney, Scott and Mason hanging out. So, you know, they’re just being super rich and powerful together. Kim and Kanye are once again matching outfits, of course when all of a sudden someone tells Kanye he has no talent.

Someone Tells Kanye West He Has No Talent.

To which of course Kanye responds back with “I’m Kanye West, That makes no sense.” Which is arguably a comeback so grandiose, witty and perfect that I was actually brought to tears when I heard it. It’s true, it doesn’t make sense. Even if someone argues that his music takes no talent, he is talented at being famous.

Kanye has built up his credibility as a musician and as soon as it was established he started becoming this insane sort of hyper-celebrity. His name itself is a punchline and household name all at the same time. He is completely ridiculous and there is no use fighting it. We should stop telling him not to be ridiculous and encourage and enable him. Whether we like it or not at this point Kanye is here to stay, and if he’s going to be famous he might as well continue to be completely batshit-insane about it. That’s I’m excited to see what’s in the future for Kanye. Especially now that he’s engaged to Kim. I’m a little disappointed that he isn’t shaking things up at award shows anymore, but what better way to enable him as the mad genius that he is than to throw him into the shark tank of fame which is the Kardashian Family.
